HOT TIN ROOF

A hot tin roof seems a strange thing to find in the Outer Hebrides. Stranger still, is the fact that the tin roof in question is that of a disused railway carriage on an island where there isn’t and never has been a railway !

History tells of a former owner of the island, Lord Leverhulme, and his plans to build a railway linking Lewis in the north with Harris in the south, but it was never to be. It’s possible that the 2 old carriages now resting on their bellies in a peat bog by the old road to Uig , had been intended for that abandoned project.

This brings to mind a story I heard recently, about a lady traveller , back in the days before we had an airport here.

The port of Stornoway is sometimes visited by cruise ships whilst on their passage around the Scottish Islands.

Our story begins after we had been hit with a bought of the stormy weather that often frequents these parts. A large ship docked in the harbour and a lady passenger came ashore with tales of a horrendous journey, during which she had suffered constant ,violent sea-sickness. In fact, her illness was so bad she seems to have lost all track of her bearings. As on entering the first shop she came to, she asked directions to the station so as to catch the first train back to London. There was no way she was ever going to set foot on a boat again !

And so back to my photograph of a hot tin roof. This is a magic picture. I first noticed this when I was framing it for an exhibition. When up-side-down, the waves in the corrugated tin appear to change places with each other. Those that dip in , now rise out and those that rise out now seam to dip in.

You may get an idea of the effect on your screen by standing on your head or turning your pc up-side-down. But for the best result, you could always buy a print of the photograph itself.
