RUSTY OLD FLOAT

Mother Nature's hand is in the subjects of all my photos. The way a tree grows towards the sun, the unfurling of Spring's new growth and the effect of the elements on even the most mundane of objects. Like the rusty old float, turned from an ugly chunk of functional metal, into a work of art, by years spent in the ocean's punishing waves. As the salty water eats into the metal, a new face is revealed. One filled with glorious colours and textures. Simply rust, but blooming like an exotic flower, it's petals bathing in the warm autumn sunlight.

I came across my rusty old float whilst out for a walk with friends on a warm and sunny October day. I had been up and out with my camera since first light. Mid morning, I stopped to visit some friends and after sharing a late breakfast of fresh farm eggs, the 3 of us and my dog Mucky, set off for a walk. Through the village, over the hill and down to the sea loch of West Loch Roag. We watched the cheeky skamperings of a mink, notorious for the havoc they cause, but still cute as a button.

After exploring the ruins of some old black houses, we came across a small fresh water loch a few hundred yards from the sea. There , resting on it's fat belly, in the peaty shallow was this casualty of the many Atlantic storms that lash our Hebridean shores.

The closer I got, the more I realised what a treasure I'd found. A simple shape, just a ball with a hole through it, but with a skin of the most intricate colours and textures. The closer I got with my camera, the more it fascinated me, until the lens was almost touching the subject.

I must have taken hundreds of shots that day, trying to capture the essence of that glorious chunk of sea junk. I hope I succeeded. But I can feel it calling me back, it has more to show me yet. As the cold clear light of winter approaches, when it will be draped in frost , ice and snow. A frozen bauble, fit to adorn any Christmas scene.
